TASMiNA Inc. is organized exclusively for cultural, social, charitable, educational, scientific and religious affairs. It brings all Sri-Lankan Muslims in North America under one umbrella to achieve these objectives. Further, it promotes interfaith understanding between TASMiNA Inc. and other organizations.
In 1991 TASMiNA Inc. was first initiated by a group of Sri Lankan Muslims in Washington. Later that year Sri Lankan Muslims in New York organized this association for the purpose of serving Muslims living in the Tri-State Area and is now a registered organization in the state of New Jersey. In the beginning, TASMiNA’s main goal was to unite and organize all members living in different parts of the Tri-State-Area as one group. This was achieved with the help of all members.
TASMiNA Inc. started enrolling Sri Lankan Muslims living in Tri-State Area as members of this association. We have annual celebrations of our holidays Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid-Ul-Adha. Annual general meeting of TASMiNA Inc. falls on the day of the Eid-ul-Adha to elect members for the executive committee. TASMiNA Inc. is expanding it’s program to our sisters, children and adults on a continuing basis. Religious and social activities are implemented for the benefits of our members.
The Janaza program is one of the first projects that we started from the inception of this association. We publish a newsletter from time to time to highlight our ongoing efforts. Programs for youths, sports activities, Day of Lailathul Qadir celebration, picnics, scholarships, and Islamic publications are some projects that TASMiNA Inc. is involved in on a continuum basis. TASMiNA Inc. also has undertaken some projects in Sri Lanka. We helped purchase books for Muslim schools in Sri Lanka. We worked on special projects to help build houses, kitchens, and bathrooms for poor families during the Tsunami. We are also providing scholarships to disadvantaged graduates and undergraduates to complete their education. One of our prime projects was completed during TSUNAMI disaster in Sri Lanka at the cost of $100,000.
